The Women’s Affairs Unit at the Polytechnic College – Al-Qadisiyah, as part of the third National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security / Pillar of Prevention (Clause One), organized a workshop titled (Details of UN Resolution 1325 and its Introduction), in collaboration with the Nursing Department. The workshop was presented by Dr. Asaad Thamer and Dr. Israa Nazim.
The workshop provided a comprehensive introduction to UN Resolution 1325 as one of the most significant international resolutions supporting the role of women in peace and security. It explained the historical context in which the resolution was adopted in 2000 and the reasons behind its adoption by the Security Council, particularly in light of armed conflicts and their disproportionate impact on women and girls.
The workshop also addressed the concept of the resolution and its key components, which are based on four main pillars: participation, protection, prevention, and relief and recovery. Each pillar was explained in simple terms, highlighting its importance in practical terms.
Additionally, the workshop discussed the role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and decision-making, emphasizing the importance of their involvement in negotiations, mediation, and reconciliation processes. It also covered mechanisms for protecting women from gender-based violence during and after conflicts.
The workshop further reviewed the commitments of states to implement the resolution at the national level through national action plans and supporting policies, while also shedding light on the challenges hindering the practical implementation of the resolution and ways to address them.
In conclusion, the workshop linked Resolution 1325 to the local context, emphasizing its activation to enhance the role of women in society and achieve sustainable peace and security for all.
