The Department of Nursing Techniques at the Al-Qadisiyah Polytechnic College, a subdivision of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, organized a scientific course titled: “Pre-Marital Genetic Testing: A Means to Limit Genetic Diseases,” with the participation of several faculty members and students.
The course was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nawras Adnan Abdul-Amir, Lec. Dr. Baraa Jalil Saeed, and Asst. Lec. Ahmed Jassim Mohammed. The sessions covered the definition of genetic diseases and highlighted their importance as an awareness initiative aimed at building healthy families and a society free from genetic and chronic conditions.
The course also discussed the significance of pre-marital genetic screening and its role in reducing cases of genetically incompatible consanguineous marriages, as well as the early detection of risks resulting from the transmission of recessive genetic traits.
The lecturers emphasized the necessity of enhancing health awareness and promoting the culture of proper family planning, moving beyond pure emotion. This contributes to reducing the birth of children with genetic health issues, supporting the development of a healthier, more stable society, and alleviating the economic and psychological burdens on families and health institutions.
