In celebration of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and When Conducive to Terrorism, the Scientific Division at the Polytechnic College – Al-Qadisiyah, one of the formations of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, organized an awareness seminar titled “Violent Extremism and the Role of Educational Institutions in Combating This Phenomenon.” The seminar was held under the patronage of the College Dean, Professor Dr. Zaki Mohammed Abbas Bahiya, in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Unit and the Department of Community Health Technologies.
The seminar featured presentations by Associate Professor Dr. Misar Jabar Jree, Head of the Department, and Lecturer Ayman Rashad Ayal. They addressed violent extremism as one of the most dangerous phenomena threatening societal stability and security, as it is based on adopting radical ideas that reject others and resorting to violence as a means of imposing opinions or achieving specific goals.
The seminar clarified that extremism often arises from multiple factors, including ignorance, lack of awareness, misinterpretation of religious or ideological beliefs, as well as social and economic conditions that may drive individuals toward extremist ideas that, in some cases, can lead to terrorism.
The seminar emphasized the critical role of educational institutions as the first line of defense against this phenomenon. Schools and universities contribute to shaping balanced personalities based on dialogue, respect for diversity, and acceptance of differences. They also help instill values of citizenship, national belonging, and promote critical thinking, enabling students to distinguish between sound and deviant ideas.
Additionally, the seminar highlighted the importance of cultural and awareness activities in spreading a culture of peace and tolerance, encouraging students to express their opinions in civilized ways, free from fanaticism and violence.
At the conclusion of the seminar, it was stressed that curriculum development, teacher training, and strengthening cooperation between families and educational institutions are essential steps in combating the spread of extremist thought. This will help build an informed generation capable of confronting challenges with moderate thinking and positive behavior, contributing to the achievement of security and stability in society.
